Organic Selenium: A Powerful Antioxidant that Strengthens Immune Response

By: Sheryllyn B. Ortiz, REFAMED ReCheck

Selenium is an essential trace mineral that has an important role in the body’s physiological functions, antioxidant system, and immune defense. It is not synthesized by the body. The major source of dietary selenium is from food or feed, for humans and animals. Hence, selenium supplementation gives an advantage in the antioxidant system and immune defense. An adult person has a minimum daily requirement of 50 microgram Selenium. But not all plant food sources have equal Selenium content due to differences in minerals assimilated from the soil. There are regions with low selenium levels and were reported to have widespread viral infectious diseases and were most susceptible to virus infection.

Commercial swine and poultry production involves intensive farming that can be stressful to animals affecting health and nutrition. Selenium is an important element to help reduce animal stress and improve immune response.

Organic Selenium in the form of Selenohydroxymethionine is more bioavailable and consistent in providing beneficial effects. Unlike inorganic selenites, selenohydroxymethionine is less toxic and more stable. Selenohydroxymethionine is easily hydrolyzed and absorbed as selenomethionine, the storage form retained in eggs and muscle tissues of animals. During high stress and challenging condition, it is immediately converted to selenocysteine and acts as a potent antioxidant component. It is an integral part of the oxidation-reduction cycle of glutathione to scavenge free radicals. Thus, Selenium has a more potent antioxidant property to protect humans and animals against free radicals and oxidative stress lowering the risk of oxidative stress and incidence of inflammation and enhancing the immunity of animals and humans.

Currently, the swine and poultry industry is still in a challenging situation due to the Covid19 pandemic which affects almost all businesses and disease outbreaks particularly ASF. To survive this challenging market situation, farm production efficiency is critical which depends on management, genetics, environment, health, and well-balanced nutrition. Feeding bioavailable source of Selenium to pigs and poultry such as Selisseo, a powerful antioxidant that strengthens immune response, helps improve farm productivity. Moreover, the Selenium-enriched eggs and meat can provide health benefits to humans.
